A storm of challenges

Why haven’t we already changed course?

The difficulty lies, not in the new ideas, but in escaping from the old ones

John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946), economist and philosopher

In a nutshell, if we are to change course (quickly enough to prevent ecological collapse), then it is essential for us to identify and understand:

  • whatever’s been preventing us from changing course
  • how our behaviours are driven by both our unchangeable nature and changeable context (the systems that shape our attitudes, options, and actions)
  • the key habits we need to break

Challenges sections:

  1. We don’t have the societal change ingredients of focus, belief, and numbers
  2. We have been too busy to clearly see our own nature, systems, and plight
  3. We are kept busy, muddled, and divided by our flawed economic system
  4. We can’t change course without empowering ourselves as one global team
  5. We can’t transform our economic system if we keep accommodating its flaws
